I dont think that there is an alternative to penalty shoot outs.It plays important role in showing which team should really win because during the play with all the fouls and defensive approach any weak team could resist a very good team but when it comes to penalty shoot-outs, with only the goal keeper and a player shows how good a particular team is. There are five penalty kicks that is to be done by five different players. Hence a team that is not depending on one single player will win.So is the case with the goal keeper.
